The FirstClass Client is a stable, robust, encrypted interface that allows authenticated login to a communications server located in your secure network. FC Memex extends this server back through your network to the servers that are located there! It is possible to set up access, on a user-by-user basis, to the appropriate locations within a server, and deliver the contents to the user through their login to FirstClass! All without actually setting up any shares between the servers!
FC Memex leverages the technologies found in Windows based computers, and FirstClass Application Services (FCAS). FCAS makes an encrypted connection between the server and the FirstClass server, and permits Searching and Browsing of the server contents (controlled by the Administrator so that people only see what they should), including Downloading and Uploading of files, plus the ability to annotate those files for the benefit of others who may need them.
This is not unusual: Virtual Private Network technology has allowed this kind of sharing for years. Unfortunately, VPNs are:
- difficult to set up - generally require a high level of user understanding to make work correctly - add another layer of complexity to security passwords - are slow
FC Memex avoids all this, allowing the user to access server contents merely by logging into their FirstClass system account! The group controls of FirstClass make is easy for Administrators to control who is able to see what inside the FCMemex containers.
FC Memex makes use of the powerful Indexing service of Windows. As a result, all of the files that FCMemex provides access to can be found through either Browsing (hunt and seek by hand) or using a sophisticated Search mechanism. Users can download files, and upload new files as well!
• Drag your file to the upload bar of your Digital Library in FirstClass - where the arrows are on the right
• The file is uploaded via FirstClass directly into the remote server! It will be automatically OCR processed, and available to be found by both Search and Browse techniques! (This assumes the storage server has the Windows 7 Pro operating system).
• To upload multiple files, you can compress them into a ZIP archive, and upload the archive. FCMemex will unzip the archive on-the-fly and add the individual items to the library.
• For those who are located directly on the network physically, FCMemex supports WebDAV in Office 2010 so that files can be directly opened across the network rather than downloaded, then uploaded.
