FC MEMEXTM Walkthru
On your FirstClass Client desktop, you have a folder with icons linking to external information sources using FCMemex. You open the folder to see the icons. The icons below show two Browsing folders, which you can open and then drill down through the file tree structure, and one Search item, which will let you full-text search on the contents of that database.
If you double click on the Model Railroading icon, you will be presented with a Windows Explorer / Mac Finder style folder and file list:
You can choose the Doubleclick action: Download (copy the file to your local drive), Preview (show the first page of the document), Annotate (add notes to the item for the use of others) or Open (using WebDAV and Office 2010 on the local network you can open files directly on the server).
If you choose the Manuals icon with the Search glass on it, you will be presented with a window you can enter your search in. The Standard Search allows for free text queries:
The Extended Search allows you to search for specific items in the Filename, Content and Meta Data attributes. You can use the same kind of search language that is supported in Google. Complex searches can be saved as templates, and can be selected by choosing the Search Templates tab.
The result of any kind of search is a Results list, that displays the File name with date and time, the abstract of the document, a ranking showing the number of hits of the search term, and options including Download, Preview, Annotate and set Notification. By clicking on the options, the user can access the found file in whichever manner is appropriate.
Selecting a document from the result list opens a media-neutral Document Property Form, which displays as much information as FC MEMEX™ can extract from the original server-side file.
In case of text documents ( .pdf, .doc, .txt, .html, .xls etc.) the following information will be displayed: - a text extract of user adjustable length - document properties like author, keywords, size, date of last change - user ratings
In case of image documents ( .jpg, .tif etc.) the following information will be displayed: - an automatically generated thumbnail image - EXIF metadata if available - user ratings
